Nick chats with ironman George Hood
on day 1, 6 and 7 of his quest to break the record.
This is the online resource that will now feature news, highlights and information about George’s recent Guinness World Record and ultra spin cycling
marathon on behalf of the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign held May 4-12, 2008 in Naperville, IL. The site also has background information regarding George’s
previous Guinness World Record setting events July 10-14, 2007 and in January, 2007 in Burr Ridge, IL.
During the period May 4-12, 2008, George set a new GWR of 178 hours on the stationary “spin” bike at the Fry Family YMCA in Naperville, IL in conjunction
with George’s attempt to raise money for the Heritage YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. George subsequently raised over $30,000 as a result of his ultra marathon
effort and GWR on behalf of the Strong Kids Campaign. As many of you know, George’s original goal was to surpass the Tasmanian attempt of 132 hours and ride
for 154 hours. During the course of his ride, George and his crew were notified by GWR officials that a previous attempt had just been certified and that the
new GWR was now 175 hours, nearly 20 plus hours more than what George had originally planned on doing. After a quick assessment of his physical condition and
coordination with his dedicated support crew and a private conversation with trainer/coach Preston Bokos, George agreed to press on to establish a new GWR.
Despite the huge potential psychological setback, George rallied his supporters and friends and unleashed a heated personal drive to surpass the 175 hour mark
which he did and ultimately set the new GWR at 177 plus hours!
George’s recent 8 day effort on behalf of the Heritage YMCA Group raised significant
funds for the Strong Kids Campaign which provides facilities and
services in the towns of Naperville, Aurora and Oswego. In doing so, George drew awareness to the countless kids and families who need, and ultimately will
benefit from the many donations and resultant programs associated with the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. In conjunction with this charity fundraising event, George
also set the new Guinness World Record for the Static “Spin” Cycling Marathon at 177 plus hours! George’s goal was an inspirational journey that drew hundreds
of visitors to the Fry Family YMCA to witness this historic event. George’s ultra Guinness World Record setting event was indeed done with the same passion and
inspiration that touched so many lives and helped so many folks during the previous attempts, all of which started with George’s inaugural ride in January, 2007
on behalf of the Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) and his subsequent record setting ride in July, 2007 on behalf of the special needs kids of
Kiwanis. George and his crew want to thank the countless friends and supporters from the City of Naperville and the surrounding communities who witnessed and
participated in this historic event and helped George memorialize his record setting feat on behalf of the Heritage YMCA Strong Kids Campaign in the upcoming
Guinness Book of World Records to be published this fall.
